It feels strange being in HK. Having spent all morning trying to find the restraint not to call him, I realise that I deleted his numbers with exception of his CH mobile a while ago.

What a woman can tell with someone’s voice. It was extremely telling. Like the others, I chose to walk away.

I really have to learn to stick around.

The alphabet of the day – T

Life is full of first’s. Last night was the first time I heard traumatic in the same breath as my name. And they say that men aren’t good with words. 

Wot a winner.

Being the eternal organiser, the sms folders in my phone are organised to a T. With the Prof, I had started an email folder especially for all things, TL. When my computer crashed, along went the idea of giving him the best present ever. Our “conversations”. Lately, my life has seen the need for some housekeeping.

In a matter of moments, what once was there did not exist anymore. Funny, isn’t it? In the arvo, my chest tightened to a familiar feeling and I had to tell myself to breathe. People don’t realise the impact they have on your life when they decide to walk out. They do what they do because, they are who they are.

2008 is proving to be a better year than 2007 ever was. No passings, no incredible sadness and no pondering of what might be.

Patience is something I’ve yet to learn. The idea that a journey begins with a single step is something I grapple with. Daily. Yet, on some level, I am here.

Amelie was being difficult and Shyster K told me to be patient, to leave things alone. Knowing what a battle that is, I replied that it was impossible. Moments of silence passed as he indulged my endless barrage of queries amidst the yawns. I stood up to find that Amelie decided to be better to me. She’s a fighter, that one.

As she laid there, she wondered how it was possible for someone to make a decision for her. Her.

They are as different as two people can be. More than anything, she detests the idea of just being another. There is a purpose and meaning for everything. In good time, she knows. In good time, she’ll understand.

“I cannot sleep.”

“No expectations.”

“Ergh, I still cannot sleep!”

Two minutes later.

“nom..mmm. zzz”

Puccini’s arias are part of popular culture even if the ignorant and unassuming public does not realise it. Giacomo Puccini is the talented Italian composer behind works like La Bohème and Mademe Butterfly.

The Singapore Lyric Opera is presenting Puccini’s Turandot this season. A Persian legend which tells of an icy Chinese princess whose suitors were made to answer three impossible riddles or perish. Eventually, an exiled price wins her heart in a test of sacrifice, loyalty and love.

Nessun Dorma is an aria from the final act of Turandot and Pavarotti turned it into a cult hit when he sung it during the 1990 World Cup and later, 2006 Winter Olympics. One of his signature arias, I doubt anyone will ever sing it better than Pavarotti. Bias, much?

All I hope now is that I’ll be back in Singapore by then.

In the office, I am seated with the entrance directly to my left. When the regular FEDEX dude comes by, I will usually be first at the door because he is such a sweetheart and brightens anyone’s day.

Today, he became my favourite person in Singapore. With a grin, he pointed to the declaration -CANDY. Oy vey ! What greeted me as I attempted to pry the package open was the perfume of scents that can only come from delightfully bright pastries from Ladurée.

Thanks, Shy. Sorry for waking you up, I HAD to thank you.

PS: I have a hug in reserve kept for you when you return because, there’s nothing like being gobsmacked on a Friday.

Shyster K made a proposition in half jest, a while ago. I almost balked but, I scoffed politely in my head. With his insight, he might have “heard” it but I doubt. He reminds me of what it was like to be pristine, wide-eyed and unaware. SK owns a dulcet tone to his voice which is both mellifluous and captivating. What endears me to SK frustrates me on occasion. Correlation and causation at its best – Just because two events occur together does not mean that one occurred as a direct result of the other.

I wonder to no avail. The phone stays quiet as the night turns still.

While it does not matter now but I wish I had said yes.
